TUESDAY 3RD APRIL 2007

We had two great results over Bradford park Avenue and Goole Town?

“They were great results.  To snatch a point in injury time against Bradford was very pleasing because we’ve had our own wings clipped in similar fashion, but I felt as though we earned the point overall.

“The win over Goole was even more pleasing because we had to overcome a big physical presence, as they literally tried to kick us off the park.

“Overall, the verdict was very positive on both games because we competed with teams that are doing well in the league and we didn’t look out of place.”

Next up was the visit from Wakefield and a narrow 2-1 defeat?

“I don’t like using excuses, but we had various players missing, and because we can’t afford to carry a big squad, therefore we’ve got to tinker with the squad.

“They scored a great goal to win the game, when really it could’ve gone either way.  But even their manager said they felt they had been lucky.

“On another day we could’ve won it, but we couldn’t convert our chances.”

Osset pulled off a convincing win, but you have to say that certain events during the game soured the appetite, especially the broken leg that David Brooks received?

“It was a horrific challenge on David, as the picture in the Skelmersdale Advertiser clearly shows, and how on earth the referee didn’t send the keeper is off is beyond me.  He didn’t even book him.

“When you see something like that it takes the sting out of the game, and the result was irrelevant at the end of the day.

“I wish David the best of luck as he faces the long road to recovery.”

Later in the game Jeff Underwood was sent off for seeking retribution for an awful foul that was committed on him by head butting his opponent.  You’ve taken some stick for your comments?

“I have but I’m I’ve not attempted to retract my statement and I’m not going to try to either.

“I’ve already said that I don’t condone what Jeff did, but there is an aspect of me that admires what he did, because the player that committed the foul should’ve been given a straight red, and as the referee wasn’t prepared to adhere to the rulebook, how else was the player to be punished?  I believe he’ll think twice before committing an act of gross cowardice again.

“Jeff is out for the rest of the season with medial ligament damage as a result of this, so you have to ask the question…where is the justice?”

Wakefield managed to complete an early double over us on Saturday, but the scoreline was a bit flattering don’t you think?

“Of course it was, but with the team so decimated with injury or unavailability it was always going to be difficult for us.  Add to that an awful pitch and it was a recipe for disaster.

“Credit to our players because they tried their hardest to play football on a pitch that wasn’t conducive to our style of play, and for a large amount of the game we were still in it.

“We were hit with a sucker punch in the opening couple of minutes of the second half.  First of all Steve Akrigg’s header is cleared off the line, and straight away they’ve humped the ball up the pitch and raced clear to score.

“Ossie’s got us back on terms with the spot kick soon after, and we looked as though we could’ve gone on to win the game from that point on.  However, credit to Wakefield as they’ve played the percentage game well.  They’ve hoofed the ball up the pitch and managed to get behind our defence, and they’ve read their pitch well.”

The last three results have been disappointing, but there is still a lot to rejoice about this season, like the emergence of players like John Cass, Craig Noone and Aaron Turner and the signing of Steve Akrigg, Mark Byrne and Jeff Underwood have underpinned the statement that you are building for the future, so it’s not all been doom and gloom?

“I go back to what I said before; we can’t carry a big squad because the budget doesn’t allow us to do so, but I believe we’ve made the best of what we’ve got.

“We haven’t always had the rub of the green though.  An example is the emergence of Michael Grogan.  He forced his way into the squad from the reserves, but just as he did he broke his hand.

“Of course the same applies to David Brooks, he’s only been with the club for a short period of time and now injury has beset him.

“Amidst all the doom and gloom, there is of course a huge light at the end of the tunnel, because I’m happy with the progress the team has made, considering I’ve had to build from scratch.

“I will have to strengthen in some areas there’s no doubt about that but it’s too late to do anything now because the transfer window has closed, but I’ve already started the search.”
